Allen, Mitchell (Dr.)

Mitchell Allen is President of Scholarly Roadside Service, a publishing consulting service for academic authors, publishers, and scholarly societies. Previously, he served as Executive Editor for Sage Publications before launching two independent scholarly presses, AltaMira Press (now part of Rowman & Littlefield) and Left Coast Press (now Routledge).

In his 40 year publishing career, he was responsible for publishing about 1500 books and launching 50 journals covering almost every field in the social sciences and humanities, including books on African economic development, cultures, and prehistory. He is author or coauthor of two books and two dozen articles of his own on scholarly publishing and has offered numerous publishing workshops to scholars on four continents.

With a Ph.D. in Near Eastern archaeology from UCLA, Allen taught that subject at four different universities and published a book and several dozen articles in this field.
